Since the beginning of the war, the skies over Ukraine have been closed to civil aviation. But Russian warplanes continue to attack Ukrainian cities from the air and launch missile and bomb strikes on civilians.

Closing the skies means that the skies are patrolled by military aircraft and protected by air defense systems. When the sky is closed, all military planes that fly into a closed area get lost.

The people who signed the petition are asking NATO to shelter the sky over Ukraine. If NATO closed the skies, it would be its military forces that would patrol the skies and shoot down planes that violate the ban.

Children who have witnessed the war are also appealing to NATO to shelter the sky over Ukraine
